What Is Citizenship by Bestowal?
According to the Guidelines and Procedures for Acquisition of National Documents by Zambians in the Diaspora (2021, Ministry of Foreign Affairs), citizenship by bestowal applies to individuals over the age of 18 who previously held Zambian citizenship but automatically lost it upon acquiring another nationality—particularly before the current Constitution came into effect on January 5, 2016. These individuals may be eligible to have their Zambian citizenship restored.
The Two Key Documents You’ll Need
To initiate the restoration process, the applicant must demonstrate proof of prior Zambian citizenship. Two primary documents are required:
- National Registration Card (NRC) – A copy of the NRC held prior to the loss of citizenship. If lost, a police report from your country of residence must be submitted, ideally indicating the NRC number.
- Zambian Passport – A copy of a previously held Zambian passport.
Without at least one of these documents, proving eligibility for restoration becomes significantly more challenging. This is why it’s critical for Zambians living abroad, especially those born to Zambian parents, to secure and safeguard these documents, even if they currently hold another nationality.
